The 2018 International (Meishan) Bamboo Industry Fair, which is themed “Bamboo Links the World”, opened in Meishan, Sichuan on June 29th. In addition to a spectacular opening ceremony, the fair featured an action-packed three-day celebration of bamboo culture and industry, including the Bamboo Industry High-end Forum and Workshop, Bamboo Products Exhibition and Fair, Bamboo Industry & Bamboo Products Business Cooperation and Signing Ceremony.

"Bamboo Concert" made its international debut at the opening ceremony. During the 50-minute performance, artists from Madagascar, Japan, Ecuador, Vietnam and a host of other countries delighted and wowed the audience with their unique arsenal of musical instruments made out of bamboo. Performances with the bamboo instruments ushered the audience into the amazing landscape of Meishan and offered a glimpse into the idyllic life of the locals.

In addition, a licensing ceremony was held to grant Qingshen County, Meishan City the titles of "National Qingshen Bamboo Weaving Demonstration Park", "Bamboo Product Exhibition Base of International Bamboo and Rattan Organization" and "Bamboo Technique Training Qingshen Base". The ceremony also witnessed the official licensing of the newly-founded "Sichuan Bamboo Industry Science and Technology Innovation Alliance" and the awarding of the certificate of "Master of Bamboo Craft in the Asia-Pacific Region" to Chen Yunhua, a master of Qingshen Bamboo Weaving.

Meishan, which birthed the celebrated literatus and painter Su Dongpo in the Song Dynasty, is an important component of the state-level development zone Tianfu New Area, the Chengdu Economic Zone and the Greater Emei International Tourism Zone. The city is second only to the provincial capital Chengdu in the number of Global Fortune 500 companies setting up shop in the area. Green development has become the overriding priority for Meishan, a city that boasts 720, 000 hectares of bamboo forests and over 300 bamboo species. The annual gross output value of the bamboo industry in Meishan, which comprises a broad range of bamboo processing operations including bamboo pulp paper, bamboo woven products, bamboo furniture, bamboo boards, bamboo charcoal and bamboo shoots, has reached 5.5 billion RMB.
