The sun of midsummer is bringing light and hope to more than 10,000 impoverished families in Huludao, China. Each photovoltaic power station will bring benefits to these poor families for at least 20 years.

On the afternoon of July 16th, in Yangshuwan Township, Jianchang County in the north of Huludao City, several stone mountains have been covered with solar panels. Thousands of solar panels convert the summer sunlight into strong currents and feed them into the grid.

There are 65 such spectacular solar panel arrays in Jianchang County, which are called village-level poverty alleviation power stations. The power generation panels placed in the farmers’ houses are called household-type photovoltaic power plants. All solar power stations in the county can generate 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per hour and can get more than 20 million yuan in revenue each year. The money will be used for poverty alleviation in Jianchang County, creating labor opportunities for thousands of poor people.

Jianchang County, Huludao City, takes advantage of the natural advantages of the long sunshine hours in the local area, and vigorously implements photovoltaic power generation poverty alleviation projects according to local conditions. In 2016, the distributed photovoltaic poverty alleviation power station project with a total installed capacity of 46 MW and covering 11,000 households was included in the list of the first batch of photovoltaic poverty alleviation projects in the country. Jianchang became the only county in the province to be approved for this project. After continuous efforts, the county currently has 6,030 household-type photovoltaic power stations, 65 village-level poverty alleviation power stations, and 93 village collective power stations operating well, benefiting 13,721 poor households.

According to estimates, each set of solar panels can be used for 20 to 25 years, and the cost can be recovered in about 5 years. Photovoltaic projects have brought stable income to poor households without the ability to work, and built environmental friendly “small banks” for farmers.
