The Green Development of Weinan, Shaanxi Province Takes New Steps in the Beginning Year of the 14th Five-Year Plan Period

2021 marks the beginning of the 14th Five-Year Plan period. In this context, Weinan City of Shaanxi Province, with adhering to the concepts of "Green Development, Intensive Development and Energy-efficient Development", focuses on comprehensively improving the ecological environment, and revitalizes itself with the support of green development, making remarkable achievements in recent years.

Weinan is reputed as the "Eastern Gateway" to Shaanxi Province. It lies beside the Qin Mountains to the south and the Yellow River to the east, playing a key role in the ecosystem. Since 2021, Weinan has been coordinating all the work to comprehensively improve the ecological environment and joining hands with other regions of the Yellow River Delta to strengthen overall protection and build livable places with nice environment.

Forests are the largest carbon sinks within the terrestrial ecosystem. Since 2021, Weinan has been working hard to build itself into a National Forest City via large-scale afforestation, protection and restoration of natural forests. Its forest resources have been well protected and developed. Up to now, Weinan has completed afforestation on 2,679,000 mu (178,600 hectares) of land, and its forest coverage rate has increased from 25.5% to 37.85%.

In 2020, Weinan's renewable energy power generation capacity was 2.082 billion kW.h, a year-on-year increase of 23.8%, accounting for 12.6% of the total electricity consumption of the society. It was equivalent to saving 641,300 tons of standard coal, cutting 2,075,700 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and planting 113,000 trees.

Since 2021, Weinan has been working vigorously to accomplish the country's carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals on schedule. 88 green and environmentally friendly projects will be developed within this year, and the city will comprehensively improve its ecological environment. By the end of June 2021, Weinan's renewable power generation capacity had ranked among the top three in Shaanxi Province.

"The 14th Five-Year Plan period will be crucial for Weinan's ecological space to become even greener. Green has already become the symbolic color of Weinan's development", stated Lu Yimin, Chief Engineer of Weinan Forestry Bureau.
