Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Development Center of Sichuan Province Established

Recently, the establishment of the Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Development Center of Sichuan Province and the kick-off meeting of irrigation area model construction action was held in Dujiangyan City, northwestern edge of Chengdu Plain, marking the largest irrigation area in China--Dujiangyan Irrigation Area has entered a new stage of development.

In 256 BC, Li Bing, an expert on water conservancy projects in the Warring States Period, led numerous people to build the world-famous Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project, earning the Chengdu Plain a reputation of "land of abundance". After 2277 years of development, Dujiangyan now boasts an irrigated area of 11.3 million mu, covering 40 counties (cities, districts) in 7 cities including Chengdu City, Deyang City, and Mianyang City, becoming the largest irrigated area in China with the functions of flood mitigation and prevention,  comprehensive water supply for life and production as well as ecology in the plain economic region of Chengdu.

The Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Development Center was established by the Sichuan Provincial Water Resources Department integrating the water management units of 8 irrigation areas. It will fully realize the unified command and dispatch of the construction, management, and operation of the irrigation area.

Guo Hengxiao, director of the Sichuan Provincial Water Resources Department, said that the establishment of the Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Development Center will provide a solid water security guarantee for the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle and the high-quality development of the plain economic region of Chengdu, which has far-reaching historical and important practical significance.

At present, the Center is stepping up the efforts to improve of the "Three-year Action Plan for Dujiangyan to Build an International Famous and Domestic First-class Irrigation District Model", focusing on the five major sectors of engineering, management, science and technology, culture, and talents, and implementing ten actions to build the irrigation district model. The key actions are to promote the shortcomings of infrastructure, the major improvement of service functions, the highlight of key tasks, and start a new journey for the development of water conservancy in the Dujiangyan Irrigation Area.
