  Tanya Rivero: Golf, ya know we don’t think of it as a contact sport, but there’s still lots of injuries you can get, correct?

  Dr. Christopher Magovern: You’re right. It’s not a contact sport, but when you put a metal stick in their hands and ask them to strike a hard golf ball, sometimes at speeds of a hundred, to a hundred and twenty miles an hour, injuries will occur.

  Tanya: And you say that the injuries that are most common that you see are orthopedic in nature. Is that right?

  Dr. Christopher: Yeah. There are crazy injuries that can occur. You can be struck by a golf ball, you can be hit by lightning, you can have a golf cart accident. There are even anecdotal reports of some golfers losing hearing from the higher technology equipment that’s out there that emits a sound.

  Tanya: I heard about that! Unbelievable!

  Dr. Christopher: But the most common injuries, by far and away, are orthopedic. The injuries that we see in professional golfers are related to overuse. They have the same groomed swing that they repeat time and time again.

  Tanya: So do they tend to target one area of the body or it varies?

  Dr. Christopher: It varies. The most common injuries are the back, followed by the elbow, and the wrist. The back is an important part of the golf swing because we use a lot of bending to create torque and power. Elbows are another very common sight of injury, and uh, you can involve the outside of your elbow which is called Tennis Elbow, or the inside of your elbow which is called Golfer’s Elbow.

  谭雅:他们损伤的往往是身体的同一个部位还是不同部位?

  Tanya: So, what can the amateur do to avoid this? Does stretching beforehand help?

  Dr. Christopher: That’s a great point. There are some palliative measures to treat the problem once you have it, to rest the joints, to take non-steroidal medications, but the key is to prevent the injury from happening, and that’s the way the pros do it, and you do it by conditioning, getting yourself in shape, getting your core muscles strong, stretching, getting out to the driving range and hitting easy shots first. Don’t get a driver out of your bag and try and hit it over the fence, uh, right away. The other thing is to take lessons. Get a good swing, a groomed swing, so that you’re hitting the ball more gracefully. And the last thing that you can do to try to avoid these injuries is to hit off grass, not mats. The mats that you see at driving ranges that are made of rubber are very, very firm, and they predispose you to having injuries.

  谭雅:业余高尔夫球手怎么预防这些损伤?打球前做伸展运动有用吗?

  克里斯托弗医生:这点很重要。一旦你出现了损伤,有一些缓解的方法:放松关节、使用非甾体类药物,但关键还是要防止损伤发生,这也是职业高尔夫球员的做法,你可以通过训练、保持良好的状态、保持核心肌群强壮,做伸展运动,到了高尔夫练习场先练习简单的击球来防止损伤的发生。不要一上场就马上从包里取出球杆,将球击过防护网。另外就是向别人学习,挥杆要正确、漂亮,这样你的击球才能更加优雅。最后你能做的避免损伤发生的事情就是将球击到草地上,而不是垫子上。高尔夫练习场上的垫子是用橡胶制成的,非常非常硬,容易使你受伤。

  8. driving range: 高尔夫练习场。

  9. driver   n . (发球时用的)球棒。
