Lost in Translation
"Lost in Translation", set in Tokyo, is a comedy that tells the story of two lost souls with about a 25-year age gap. The film is generally about being lost in a foreign place, lost in a life direction, and lost in a relationship with someone.
Bob Harris, played by Bill Murray, is a washed-out Hollywood movie star. He finds himself in Japan cashing in on an offer of a Japanese brand of whisky to do some commercial for them. Away from his wife and kids, Bob realizes that he is not completely happy with his life. Charlotte, played by Scarlett Johansson, is Bob's opposite. She has just graduated from Yale in philosophy and married to a young photographer who is on assignment in Japan. She tagged along only to see him do nothing but work. She wonders if she is happy in her relationship.
Bob and Charlotte are both lost in a place where they know no one, do not speak the language nor know about the local customs. Bob catches Charlotte's eye at a bar because she recognizes a lost soul similar to herself. Bob is not sure whether to act fatherly or just friendly. Nothing really happens in this movie. Two Americans meet in a foreign country, they share each other's company, and that's the end. Given the plot's simple premise, the film underlines director Sofia Coppola’s writing and directing talents.
Throughout most of the film, the main characters never exchanged a single kiss or a loving glance, but the audience is able to see a love develop between them. Bill Murray is great in bringing nuance to his character. He cheers you up with his subtle humor on several occasions. Johansson, despite being only 19, is also remarkable in her role as Charlotte. Their performances are subtle, but their interactions seem absolutely real. When the movie is over, you may find yourself wanting to spend more time with the characters, hear more of that wonderful dialogue and watch more of the exquisite cinematography.
Lost in translation
