Treasure Trove of Jazz Memorabilia Goes to Auction
Some of the instruments that helped make Jazz what it is are going to auction in New York. The items include saxophones that belonged to Charlie "Bird" Parker and John Coltrane, as well as Dizzy Gillespie's trumpet.
Auctionier Arlan Ettinger calls the event the first ever major jazz auction.

"These are the great treasures. To look at a thirty-one page letter written from the heart by Louis Armstrong at a pivotal time in his career, at a time when he was making changes and sort of reviewing his whole life. That's not just memorabilia, you don't see things like that at flea markets, this is as good as it gets."
He says most of the 400 items were consigned by the families of the jazz legends who originally owned them.
Several family members will donate the proceeds to foundations that promote jazz and provide scholarships to young musicians.
Among the items are a 27-page letter handwritten by Louis Armstrong, a smoking jacket worn by Thelonious Monk, an unreleased tape of a 1951 performance by Parker and a gown in which Peggy Lee sang "Fever".
It's estimated that Parker's saxophone and Coltrane's tenor saxophone could each sell for as much as one-million dollars.
saxophone：萨克斯管。在口语中sax也表示萨克斯管。Tenor：形容词男高音的，那么 tenor saxophone就是高音萨克斯的意思。Trumpet：喇叭。
