Tonglu, Zhejiang: Turn the "Lucid Water" Into the "Source of Fresh Water" for Prosperity

In recent years, Tonglu County, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, remains committed to the four-character policy of "intercepting, clearing, diversion, and repairing" to purify water and improve the  environment. Its industrial transformation depends on a water-friendly model which brings about the quality improvement of "remediation-upgrade-transformation" for small and micro water bodies.

Xiaoyuan Village, Fenshui Town, was originally a "stinky village" due to pig farming. However, its water environment quality has been remarkably elevated by closing the breeding farms and implementing projects to improve small watersheds and treat rural domestic sewage. The renovated water environment has helped the village to build a Coral Ridge rural resort that integrates dining, housing, entertaining, traveling, and health-nurturing practices. The collective economy has also increased from zero to over 400,000 yuan. At present, the water quality of the main rivers in the county has all hit Class III or above.

Water control is a systematic project because it is about improving both water quality and scenery. As early as 2009, Huanxi Village began to promote the "artificial wetland", a model of domestic sewage treatment, and has constructed nine domestic sewage tanks since then.

A stable natural ecosystem has been established by restoring small and micro water bodies in Tonglu County through such scientific approaches as artificial wetlands, ecological floating islands, and aquatic plant cultivation. The technology of slope protection has been adopted for ecological transformation and restoration of waterfront ecology. Up to now, there are 1,644 constructed wetlands and 108 ecological floating islands, which not only purify the water and restore water biodiversity, but also form a complete ecological restoration system.

Since 2017, Tonglu County has built a total of 108 demonstration sites in 5 categories including natural baths, water parks, neighborhood centers, aquaculture centers, and fish farms based on remediated small and micro water bodies, with the goal of full-coverage ecological restoration and advantages in location and water quality. These demonstration sites have formed 38 complexes of water control and transformation, making the collective economy of the village more prosperous and creating more ways for villagers to raise their income.
