Recently, representatives of the U.S. government went door-to-door in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, trying to arrange a visit by Second Lady Usha Vance—only to be flatly turned down at every turn. With no one willing to receive her, plans had to be altered: the visit was rerouted to a U.S. military base in northern Greenland, where Vice President Vance himself eventually led the delegation.
During the visit, Vance expressed hope that Greenland would opt for the United States’ so-called “security umbrella”—a notion swiftly and strongly opposed by various parties in Denmark.
Danish media were quick to comment, calling the move a symptom of an “outdated colonial mindset.”
