On May 19, ahead of the International Day for Biological Diversity, the youth volunteer service team from State Grid Nanchang Power Supply Company visited Yingxiong School in the Nanchang Economic Development Zone. Through engaging science outreach activities, vivid videos, and interactive Q&A sessions, the volunteers helped students learn about rare migratory birds, including the Oriental White Stork—a nationally protected Class I species in China—promoting the concept of jointly safeguarding the “lifelines” of migratory birds.

In class, when children curiously asked whether it’s safe for migratory birds to nest on power towers, the young volunteers patiently explained: “The power supply company has installed bird-repelling devices and online monitoring equipment to guide birds to build nests in safe areas and to monitor their breeding activities in real time.” The volunteers also shared touching stories from a six-year-long campaign called “Dual Protection of Birds and Power Lines,” which has helped achieve harmonious coexistence between the Oriental White Stork and power grids.

Reportedly, State Grid Nanchang Power Supply Company was the first in the country to launch the “Migratory Bird Lifeline” charity initiative and established a dedicated volunteer team. They not only promote bird conservation knowledge in migratory zones and guide local villagers to take part in observation and protection efforts, but also bring bird protection education into classrooms—striving to sow the seeds of ecological civilization in young hearts.

On the screen, flocks of Oriental White Storks soared freely over Poyang Lake. The magnificent scene drew waves of awe from the children. Perhaps at that very moment, the idea of “loving and protecting birds, and safeguarding blue skies” had quietly taken root in their hearts.(By Shuai Mei, Hu Dan)
