"The 80-li stretch of Nanshan Mountain truly lives up to its reputation! I'll definitely bring my family and friends to visit again," said Ms. Chen from Guilin. During her visit to Nanshan Pasture, known as “China’s No. 1 Pasture”, she was enchanted by the endless green grasslands, herds of dairy cows, silky yogurt, and the melodious mountain songs, making it hard for her to leave.

Located in the southwest of Chengbu Miao Autonomous County, Hunan Province, Nanshan Pasture covers a total area of 152 square kilometers. It contains approximately 15,333 hectares (230,000 mu) of contiguous natural grasslands that stretch over 80 li (approximately 40 kilometers). It is a major part of the Nanshan Scenic Area, which is a core candidate zone for the future Nanshan National Park. In recent years, guided by technological innovation, Nanshan Pasture has focused on restoring grassland ecosystems, rehabilitating degraded lands, and building a robust dairy farming base, promoting the high-quality development of Chengbu's dairy industry.
It is reported that Nanshan Pasture established a scientific restoration task force for degraded grasslands, led by the pasture director. With the coordinated development of the grassland-livestock industry and scientific progress as its central focus, the initiative aims to comprehensively enhance staff capabilities, improve coordination efficiency across various departments, and maximize the effectiveness of implementation. These efforts are closely integrated with other key initiatives such as county-wide dairy industry development and the construction of Nanshan National Park.
According to grassland and livestock experts, the results of the dairy base construction have been remarkable. Vegetation coverage in the project area has increased by 19 percentage points compared to pre-construction levels, reaching 96%. The success rate for restoring barren patches stands at 100%. The pasture now produces 3,500 kilograms of fresh forage per mu (approximately 0.067 hectares) annually, laying a solid foundation for accelerating the high-quality development of Chengbu's dairy industry.
