“We will not be paying tariffs on any aircraft deliveries we take.” To skirt the Trump administration’s tariff policy, Delta Airlines has disassembled its newly purchased Airbus A321neos in Europe. The American-made engines thus stripped are shipped back to the U.S. and installed on older aircraft while the European-made fuselages and other component parts stay put, at least for now. Ironically, as U.S. media put it, the very tariffs meant to “protect American businesses” are now tying them in knots.
