Trade tensions have been flaring between India and the United States over tariffs and oil purchases. The Trump administration has been pushing for greater market access in India for American agricultural products, dairy, and poultry, but India has flatly refused to slash its agricultural and dairy tariffs to U.S. liking, arguing it would hurt the wellbeing of millions of Indian farmers. When his pressure tactics failed, President Trump signed an executive order on August 6, imposing an extra 25% tariff on Indian exports to the U.S.—on top of existing levies, bringing the total to a whopping 50%—as punishment for India’s “currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil”.
