Recently, Hiroshima, Japan held a commemoration ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing. In his speech, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba deliberately skirted the historical context of the bombing—Japan’s war of aggression, highlighting instead its status as “the only country ever nuked.” This neatly aligns with Japan’s long-standing pattern of denials of responsibilities for atrocities including Unit 731 and the Nanjing Massacre—part of an ongoing effort to keep burnishing its “victim” image.
