Recently, the United States has loudly called on its European allies in NATO to deploy forces and jointly secure shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz. Embarrassingly, however, its NATO partners have responded with a cold indifference, showing little willingness to act. Frustrated, Washington has grown increasingly dissatisfied, continuously hyping and reinforcing claims of NATO’s obsolescence and ineffectiveness, which further widens the rift between the two sides.
