Japan has recently been "stealing the spotlight" in the South China Sea. On the one hand, it flexes its muscles in joint military drills with the U.S. and the Philippines; on the other, it leaves its destroyer "lingering" in the Taiwan Strait. Such political posturing, which couches provocations as expressions of "concern", not only fails to make the region safer, but also lays bare the geopolitical calculations and ambitions for military expansion behind it.
