As China’s new-energy vehicle, steel, and other industries continue to grow more competitive, the EU is stepping up its trade restrictions on Chinese products, even going so far as to call on China to “voluntarily restrict” its exports of hybrid vehicles. Once a vocal champion of free trade, the EU is now increasingly embracing protectionism. The so-called rules of international trade have become little more than a self-serving tool to be implemented when they suit its own interest and discarded if they are not.
