China West Normal University was founded in 1946 and renamed in 2003. The school has outstanding disciplinary advantages, with 82 undergraduate majors, including 10 disciplines including literature, history, education, science, engineering, agriculture, management, economics, law, and art.
The school has signed cooperation agreements with the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center, the Sichuan Giant Panda Ecological and Cultural Construction Promotion Association, and national nature reserves such as Wolong, Fengtongzhai, and Tangjiahe; With the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other research institutions, it has built a technology research and development platform, and has taken the lead in undertaking the national survey and research projects of giant pandas of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration for many times.
The study of giant pandas at China West Normal University began in the 1970s, with experts and scholars represented by professors Hu Jinchu and Qin Zisheng starting the study and achieving a series of internationally recognized achievements. As a result, China West Normal University also enjoys the reputation of "Panda University".
The research team is now relying on the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for the Conservation of Southwest Wild Animal and Plant Resources, the Demonstration Base for the Conservation of Giant Panda Staple Food Bamboo of the Research Center for Bamboo Resources Cultivation Engineering of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, and the provincial key disciplines of "zoology" and "Wildlife Conservation and Utilization", taking the scientific protection of giant panda population and habitat as the starting point, and gradually forming the ecology of giant panda conservation, the biology of giant panda reintroduction research, disease and nutrition ecology of giant pandas, and ecosystem ecology of giant pandas.
