“Do not plug multiple high-power appliances into one power strip beyond its rated capacity, as it may cause overloading and fire hazards. And when unplugging, avoid pulling the plug by the cord.” These were the safety reminders shared by young volunteer Niu Yuan during a recent volunteer service campaign in Taonan Village, Taocheng Town, Yanling County, Xuchang City, Henan Province. The campaign aimed to raise villagers' awareness of electricity safety.
Drawing on their professional knowledge, the volunteers focused on addressing the specific needs of rural residents—especially elderly villagers living alone. Through the distribution of safety brochures, face-to-face explanations, and educational video screenings, the event significantly enhanced the villagers' sense of fulfillment, well-being, and safety.
At the event site, volunteers used real-life examples to explain the dangers of flying kites near power lines, illegal tree planting beneath transmission lines, and unauthorized digging near utility poles. They also organized screenings of safety education videos, shared practical tips on daily electricity use and energy conservation, and taught villagers how to respond to emergencies involving electricity. In addition, volunteers conducted home visits to check electrical wiring and identify potential hazards.
“I used to think that as long as I didn’t touch the wires, it was safe,” said villager Li Jianhua after watching one of the safety videos. “But now I’ve learned that construction or excavation near power lines can also be risky. I’ll definitely be more cautious in the future.”
