Recently, Gansu Grid reported a record high in new energy generation of 24.44 GW, accounting for 81% of the province’s total power output. Additionally, the grid’s new energy storage charging power reached 3.63 GW, setting a historical peak.

By the end of April 2025, Gansu Grid’s new energy installed capacity had reached 67.1965 GW, making up 64.68% of the total capacity. To promote the efficient use of new energy, State Grid Gansu Electric Power Company has implemented a series of measures focusing on coordinated development across source-grid-load-storage.

In the thermal power sector, the company has continued the flexibility retrofitting of thermal power units in the province, reducing the peak shaving depth to 33%. In the hydropower sector, it has strengthened the coordinated operation of cascade hydropower plants, increasing peak shaving capacity to 4.09 GW, which marks a 20% year-on-year increase. In terms of grid infrastructure, the Qingyang–Shandong ±800 kV DC line and nine 750 kV projects—including those in Qinchuan, Qingyang North, and Jinta—have been commissioned, further enhancing the grid’s transmission capacity.

On the load side, the company has encouraged users to actively participate in the provincial power market. By leveraging price signals, it has motivated users to shift production schedules during periods of high new energy output, thus improving local consumption capacity. In the energy storage sector, the company has developed a coordinated energy storage control system and established a “market-oriented + emergency response” management framework. From January to May 2025, energy storage charging volume reached 1.33 TWh, representing a 73% year-on-year increase and contributing to a more than two-percentage-point improvement in new energy utilization.

Looking ahead, State Grid Gansu Electric Power Company will reinforce its role as the “central hub” of the northwest power grid, the “main corridor” for west-to-east power transmission, and a key base for the development of the new electric power system. The company will accelerate construction of outward transmission channels, continue optimizing the power market mechanism, and promote the technological upgrade of new energy grid integration and large-scale energy storage applications. These efforts will help Gansu rapidly grow into a major hub for new energy and related equipment in China.
