During the 2026 China-Brazil Year of Culture, Professor Rogério Martins Maurício of Brazil’s Federal University of São João del-Rei visited Lanzhou University at the university’s invitation. The two sides held in-depth discussions on low-carbon livestock production, grassland ecological restoration and food security, and expressed their intention to pursue inter-university cooperation. This marks another concrete step in Lanzhou University’s efforts to support China’s high-standard opening up and promote deeper and more substantive international cooperation in education, science and technology.
Focusing on Cutting-Edge Livestock Technologies and Advancing Joint Research on Key Technologies
To support the high-quality development of China’s grassland-based livestock sector, the two sides have preliminarily identified three priority areas: first, jointly conducting field trials to assess the adaptability of laser-based methane detection equipment and exploring greenhouse gas monitoring approaches for natural grasslands; second, screening livestock and poultry germplasm resources with low-emission traits to build up technical expertise for low-carbon livestock production; and third, drawing on Brazil’s experience with silvopastoral systems to explore adaptation strategies suited to Northwest China. These areas of cooperation will support China’s carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals while reflecting Chinese universities’ practical efforts to enhance global food security and address climate change.
Leveraging Complementary Academic Strengths to Support High-Quality Development in Western China
Gansu’s abundant grassland resources and diverse ecosystems provide a solid foundation for research on key livestock technologies. Drawing on its strengths in grassland science and other disciplines, Lanzhou University has worked with Professor Long Ruijun’s research team, brought together expertise from multiple disciplines and held focused discussions with Brazilian experts to align its research with the practical needs of Gansu’s pastoral areas. As one of the countries with the largest areas of agricultural land in the world, Brazil has developed well-established crop and livestock production models that offer valuable lessons for the arid pastoral areas of Northwest China. Agricultural machinery independently developed by Lanzhou University could also be applied in local agricultural production in Brazil. With food security as a shared priority, the two sides are advancing technological exchange and resource sharing.
Going forward, Lanzhou University plans to promote the application of research outcomes in industry and explore the establishment of a long-term mechanism for China-Brazil cooperation in livestock science and technology, contributing university expertise to sustainable development in both countries and around the world.
