Recently, State Grid Chongqing Jiangjin Power Supply Company enabled optical path visualization and online monitoring with smart optical distribution frames. This marks a breakthrough in Chongqing Power Grid’s efforts to upgrade optical distribution frames (ODFs), key components of the power communications network.
The fiber-optic communications network provides essential transmission infrastructure for the power grid’s core operations. As the development of a new power system advances, the network carries a growing volume of traffic. Traditional passive optical distribution equipment provides only basic connection functions and lacks automatic detection and remote monitoring capabilities. Operations and maintenance therefore rely largely on manual work. Manually updating records and troubleshooting faults on site can lead to inaccurate data and lengthy fault resolution times.
To address these issues, State Grid Chongqing Electric Power Company developed smart ODF hardware and a supporting visualization software platform to meet the requirements for optical path visualization and online monitoring. Together, they form an integrated system for smart operations and maintenance. Using sensor-based data collection, software analysis and visual displays, the system monitors and controls fiber port status and optical path performance in real time. This addresses problems such as inefficient manual inspections, difficulty locating faults and disorganized resource management, laying a foundation for smart operations and maintenance of the power communications network.
