Brazilian Student Delighted by Gift from Mei Lanfang's Hometown

On November 11, An Rouhui, a student at São Paulo State University in Brazil, received exciting news. Taizhou, Jiangsu Province—the hometown of Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang—had sent her a special commemorative set of philatelic items celebrating the 130th anniversary of Mei Lanfang's birth.

Born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, An Rouhui has a deep passion for Chinese culture and is currently studying Chinese at her university's Confucius Institute. As she delved deeper into Chinese culture, she became especially captivated by Peking Opera and the artistry of Mei Lanfang.

In 2024, as part of the celebrations marking the 130th anniversary of Mei Lanfang's birth, Taizhou's international social media account, "Taizhou, City of Health," launched a short video series titled "Tribute to the Master: Reviving Classics." An Rouhui quickly became an enthusiastic fan, engaging with and sharing every episode.

When the 130th Anniversary of Mei Lanfang commemorative philatelic items were officially launched in Taizhou on October 22, the news was shared on the city's social media platforms. Upon seeing the announcement, An Rouhui contacted the team via comments, inquiring about how to purchase these exquisite items.

After coordination between Taizhou's international media account and the relevant departments, the Taizhou Philatelic Association decided to gift her the full set of commemorative items.

“I am truly honored and thrilled to receive this precious gift from Taizhou,” An Rouhui said in an email after learning the items had been shipped on November 11. “I am eager to help more people learn about Taizhou and the great master Mei Lanfang. In Brazil, more and more people are developing an interest in Chinese culture every day.”
