Nanyang, Henan: Intelligent Cable Stripping Technology Tackles Industry Challenge

State Grid Nanyang Power Supply Company has recently achieved a breakthrough in live-line operations by successfully applying its independently developed intelligent stripping device to the maintenance of armored power cables, marking a significant advancement in live-line operations within power distribution networks. This innovation effectively overcomes the limitations of traditional manual methods—such as low efficiency and safety risks—and serves as a model for advancing the intelligent development of live-line operation tools.

In recent years, armored power cables have been widely deployed in power distribution networks. Their composite design, which features an outer metal sheath and multiple insulation layers, significantly enhances mechanical strength and resistance to corrosion. However, this structure also poses a serious challenge for on-site stripping tasks. Traditional manual stripping methods rely on simple hand tools to cut through each layer, which is not only time-consuming but also increases the risk of damaging the conductor. The risks are further amplified under live-line conditions, where workers are exposed to the danger of electric shock.

To tackle this common industry challenge, State Grid Nanyang Power Supply Company established a dedicated R&D team in Neixiang County, focusing on automation and intelligent technologies. After a year of dedicated development, the team successfully launched a new-generation intelligent stripping device. The device integrates an insulated operating rod, adaptive clamping mechanism, high-precision cutting module, and intelligent control system. Operators can remotely complete the entire stripping process from a safe distance by using the handle on the insulated rod. This design significantly reduces human error and improves the quality and consistency of the stripping operation.

By replacing manual labor with intelligent machinery, this innovation represents a transformation in live-line work practices. It also lays the groundwork for future integration with visual recognition, remote operation, and other advanced technologies.

Currently, the device has been deployed in the 10kV distribution network upgrade project in Neixiang County, where it has been well received by front-line operations and maintenance (O&M) personnel. It is expected to save the company approximately RMB 360,000 in annual O&M costs, demonstrating broad application prospects and substantial social value.
