On December 20, after more than 800 days and nights of hard work by over 1,000 builders, the dam of the Chongqing Zaodu Reservoir Project was filled to an elevation of 376.3 meters and topped out. This marks the full completion of the dam embankment operations, laying a solid safety foundation for the reservoir's impoundment in 2027.
Zaodu Reservoir Project Dam
Zaodu Reservoir is one of China's 172 major water conservation and water supply projects and 150 major water conservancy projects. Its primary functions include flood control, water supply and irrigation, while also serving comprehensive purposes such as water system connectivity, environmental protection and power generation. The project is supervised and managed by the Chongqing Water Resources Bureau and Chongqing Water and Environment Group, with CCCC Second Harbor Engineering Co., Ltd. participating in the construction.
"The reservoir has a normal pool level of 375 meters and a total storage capacity of 201 million cubic meters. Once completed, it will raise the flood control standard of the Qijiang urban area from a 20-year return period to a 50-year return period. It will supply approximately 179 million cubic meters of water to Qijiang District and other areas, meeting the water needs of more than 3 million people, add and improve an irrigation area of 234,600 mu, and provide an annual power generation of 44.94 million kWh," introduced He Yingchun, Executive Director of Chongqing Zaodu Water Resources Development Co., Ltd.
