Hubei Completes First Key Validation of New-Type Power System Featuring Main-Distribution-Microgrid Coordination

Recently, at the on-site command center in Guanyin Village, Guangshui City, Hubei Province, the 88Z3 switch on the 10 kV Shibao I circuit was opened on command, disconnecting the circuit from the main grid of the Guangshui 100% new energy new-type power system. Immediately, the grid-forming energy storage system withstood the instantaneous power-flow transfer and steadily brought the microgrid into islanded operation. After two hours of continuous autonomous operation, the microgrid was reconnected to the main grid through the 88Z3 switch via quasi-synchronization. Throughout the process, key indicators such as voltage and frequency remained stable. The success of the islanded operation test of the 10 kV-side microgrid within the Guangshui 100% new energy new-type power system marks the first time Hubei has completed a key validation of a new-type power system featuring main-distribution-microgrid coordination.
As the site of the first new-type rural microgrid demonstration project built by State Grid Suizhou Power Supply Company in Guangshui, Guanyin Village has achieved full new-energy load coverage. According to Li Zhe, deputy commander of the on-site test and a technical expert from State Grid Hubei Electric Power Research Institute, this test demonstrated a “grid within a grid” new-type power system architecture that enables active balancing across multiple voltage levels. It involved 15 distribution transformer areas and 384 households in Guanyin Village, making it the rural microgrid demonstration project with the largest user base and highest involved capacity in Hubei Province to date.
“The Guangshui 100% new energy new-type power system is a main grid capable of independent operation. This test enables its subordinate distribution grid to also operate independently,” said Li Zhe. “This model, in which both the main grid and the distribution grid can operate flexibly, independently and autonomously, greatly enriches the hierarchical structure of the new-type power system, thereby enabling coordinated development of the main grid, distribution grid and microgrid.”
