Henan is home to Jiahu Symbols - the earliest prototypes of writing systems known to humans, and the oracle bone script - the first complete Chinese character system. Li Si, who was born in Henan's Shangcai, helped Qin Shi Huang (the founder of the Qin Dynasty) unify characters by replacing other writing systems with Small Seal Script and forming writing regulations. The province is also the hometown of Xu Shen, a grammatologist native to Luohe, who compiled in his hometown Shuowen Jiezi (which literally means "discussing writing and explaining characters") - the world's first dictionary, summarized the structural laws of Chinese characters and unified the meanings of characters. For thousands of years, the Central Plains has witnessed almost the whole development process of Chinese characters.
