Explore Beijing Central Axis by Bus and Subway

On July 27, the 46th session of UNESCO's World Heritage Committee adopted a resolution to inscribe "Beijing Central Axis: A Building Ensemble Exhibiting the Ideal Order of the Chinese Capital" on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport therefore recommends two eco-friendly options - Bus No. 5 and Subway Line 8 to explore this renowned Central Axis.

Subway Line 8 runs as a north-south artery with 34 stations in operation, lining up iconic cultural landmarks of old Beijing such as Tianqiao, Qianmen, Wangfujing, Nanluoguxiang, Shichahai, and Drum Tower. Not only does it follow the Central Axis on the map, but its station design also boasts elements of the Central Axis. Additionally, some stations continue to host the "Central Axis Culture Seal Collection Activity" to further promote culture of the Beijing Central Axis in early August.

Bus No. 5 now has been in operation for 89 years. Its route runs along the Central Axis, traversing nearly half of the old downtown area of Beijing and connecting a series of renowned scenic spots such as the Grand View Garden, Qianmen Dashilan, Tian'anmen Square, Jingshan Park, Beihai Park, Drum Tower, Shichahai, and Deshengmen. The bus operates at intervals of nine to ten minutes, and during the summer vacation, two extras are running at 9:00 and 15:00 on weekdays between Deshengmen Station and Qianmen West Station.
