Huang Yishu, a native of Shexian County in Huangshan City, Anhui Province, has long been deeply involved in Huizhou's local culture. Through academic research, cultural and creative initiatives, and other approaches, she promotes Huizhou culture and brings stories from her hometown to overseas audiences.
Huang Yishu is a PhD candidate in design at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and previously spent more than a decade living in Europe. After returning to her hometown, she conducted in-depth research into Huizhou fish lantern culture, which has gained popularity online, and established a unique folk-aesthetics research framework for Huizhou fish lanterns. At an international conference in Greece, she shared these research findings with international scholars and highlighted the potential of fish lanterns for modern fashion.
Huang Yishu also runs a café, turning it into a Huizhou cultural hub that blends Huangshan tea with Western coffee. She features original fish lantern-themed cultural and creative products and brings her hometown's intangible cultural heritage overseas to promote cultural exchange.
