Under a crystal-clear blue sky and low-hanging white clouds, rows of transmission towers stand majestically at the Baotashan Converter Station in Yan’an, Shaanxi Province, casting silver-gray silhouettes under the blazing sun. On June 30, the Shaanbei–Anhui ±800 kV ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission project, a key national project under China’s “West-to-East Power Transmission” initiative, was officially put into operation.
This major energy artery spans Shaanxi, Henan and Anhui provinces and can transmit more than 36 billion kWh of electricity to Anhui each year, more than half of which is clean energy. The project injects strong green momentum into the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta.

“The project’s core equipment is fully independently controllable. From chips and other components to integrated equipment, domestic technologies are used throughout, significantly improving equipment safety and operation and maintenance support capabilities,” said Li Biao, deputy director of the DC Management Department of State Grid Shaanxi Extra High Voltage Company. According to Li, during the acceptance and commissioning stage, maintenance personnel independently completed key work such as switching characteristic tests and protection function commissioning, comprehensively strengthening their technical capabilities.
After being put into operation, the project is of great significance for transforming Shaanxi’s energy advantages, increasing the share of green power consumption in East China, and supporting the national “dual carbon” strategy.

The old revolutionary base area of northern Shaanxi is an important energy base in China. The completion and operation of the project will turn northern Shaanxi’s resource advantages into a new engine for serving national development and promoting its own green transformation, realizing a leap from a traditional energy economy to a modern energy economy. It will play an important role in promoting coordinated regional development and supporting the revitalization of old revolutionary base areas.
