In 2022, the population of giant pandas reached 364 with the birth of 13 baby pandas at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda.
In 2023, the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda will carry out scientific and technological research focusing on the major needs of giant panda conservation.
In 2023, the center will concentrate on science and technology to improve disease prevention and enhance gene exchange between wild and captive pandas.
Li Desheng, Deputy Director and Chief Expert of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, stated, "On one hand, we will carry out research and development of specialized vaccines for giant pandas. On the other hand, we will further carry out efforts in giant panda reintroduction, training and release, as well as introduction of new pandas. This work will also continue to improve the genetic diversity and conservation management of giant pandas."
In 2023, the center will focus on key areas such as improving the quality of captive populations, enhancing health management and monitoring in order to promote the protection and research of giant pandas. Efforts will be made to make significant breakthrough in the health management of giant pandas by conducting comprehensive physical examination and strengthening disease source monitoring and other ways, aiming to minimize the safety risks of giant panda populations.
"Our current focus has shifted from prioritizing quantity growth to prioritizing quality in our development stage. Our center has also taken innovative steps in conducting wild introduction of giant pandas, successfully realizing gene exchange between captive and wild pandas," Li continued.
Over the past few years, China has made encouraging achievements in breeding and conservation of giant pandas.
Moving forward, the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda will continue to promote technological research and development of related projects, providing practical scientific support for the construction of the Giant Panda National Park.
In October 2021, the Giant Panda National Park was officially established, marking a new stage in panda protection.
The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda reaffirms its commitment to providing scientific and technological support for the construction of the park, strengthening integrated management of monitoring and evaluation, and driving further achievements in the park.
Li concluded that the center will build a national panda breeding center, a science and technology center, an investigation and monitoring center, a disease control center, a cooperation and exchange center and a cultural education center, with the goal of becoming a globally renowned authority in panda conservation and research as soon as possible.
