CWNU's School of Physics and Astronomy: Specialized Disciplines Sparkle on the World's Stage

Since its establishment in 1947, the School of Physics and Astronomy at China West Normal University (CWNU) has been a prolific source of high-caliber talent for the nation and society at large. Guided by the educational philosophy of "student-centeredness and moral education first," the school is dedicated to nurturing applied and professional talents.

With a robust faculty of over 60 staff members, the school boasts a majority of professors holding doctoral degrees. In recent years, the school has made significant strides in research. Over 200 research papers have been published in internationally renowned journals such as Nature and Nature Astronomy.

A Landmark achievements include the discovery of the Qinghai Lenghu Observing Site, Asia's largest astronomical optical observing site; the proposition of the "Wu" black hole, the world's first crucial precise solution to a black hole named after a Chinese scholar; the identification of approximately 4,000 new open star clusters, designated with the name of CWNU; the resolution of longstanding controversies in the astronomical community regarding the origin of the Galactic Anticenter substructure; and the elucidation of the three-dimensional structure of the Galactic Disk.

The school offers three full-time undergraduate programs in Physics, Material Physics, and Astronomy. Physics is recognized as a top-tier and nationally specialized program. Material Physics focuses on cultivating technically skilled professionals with practical abilities and innovative consciousness. Astronomy is a nationally renowned program, jointly established by the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and CWNU, boasting top-tier faculty in the country. Additionally, the school offers master's degrees in both Physics and Astronomy, providing a broad platform for cultivating high-level talents.
