On June 22, the "Silk Road IP, Opportunities in China" international online communication campaign officially kicked off. A delegation of international "experience ambassadors" made their first stop at the Gansu Wuwei Tumor Hospital (Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center) to explore a high-end medical platform that translates research achievements from the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Modern Physics into direct clinical use.
The center's carbon-ion therapy system was independently developed and manufactured in China. Its heavy-ion precision radiotherapy technology is a domestic leader and ranks among the most advanced in the world. Capable of precisely targeting and destroying tumors while minimizing damage to healthy tissues, the center serves as a flagship platform for high-end precision cancer treatment in Northwest China.

The delegation toured several core functional areas—including the North Hall exhibition area, the Heavy Ion Central Control Room, the Heavy Ion Treatment Hall, the Physics Planning Room, and the Photon Therapy Hall—gaining firsthand insight into the operational workflows and clinical applications of heavy-ion therapy equipment.
While touring the radiotherapy technology exhibition, French delegate Wei Wuxia listened closely to a guide's presentation on two primary types of radiotherapy before asking, "Aside from these two techniques, what other radiotherapy options are available?" The guide responded with a comprehensive overview of various radiotherapy categories, patiently explaining their technical principles and clinical uses.
Members of the delegation noted that the high precision of heavy-ion therapy makes it incredibly valuable for modern oncology. Discovering such advanced medical technology in Lanzhou, a historic Silk Road hub, left a strong impression and provided a direct look at China's innovation in healthcare and its commitment to open international cooperation.

This field visit vividly showcased Gansu's achievements in technological innovation and public healthcare. Rooted in the heart of the Silk Road region, the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center leverages local scientific expertise to translate research from large-scale scientific facilities into clinical applications. This not only brings cutting-edge technology to the service of public health but also serves as a gateway for medical and scientific exchanges among Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) partner countries.
