Guizhou's Zhenyuan Leverages Dragon Boat Festival to Boost Local Economy and Tourism

During the 2026 Dragon Boat Festival holiday, Zhenyuan County in Qiandongnan Prefecture, Guizhou Province, capitalized on a massive surge of visitors drawn to its festive event series. To achieve this, the county focused on three key strategies:

The "Ticket Stub Economy": Leveraging event and attraction tickets to drive broader local consumption.

Sports Event Branding: Using premier sports competitions to attract large crowds.

New Cultural Tourism: Introducing fresh, engaging offerings to enhance visitor flow.

Driven by these strategies, the ancient city saw a steady rise in foot traffic. Spending boomed across accommodations, dining, folk culture experiences, night tours, and specialty retail, fueling a tangible increase in local incomes through the integration of culture and tourism. Overall, the county's holiday economy achieved notable gains in both quality and efficiency.

Running from June 18 to 21, the event series brought together 62 participating teams. Competitions were held across four categories: Large Dragon Boat, Women's, Open, and the "Race and Drama" category (which uniquely combines racing with theatrical performances). A newly added dragon boat tug-of-war event brought extra excitement to the festival. The program also featured a parade of dragon boats cruising the river, the traditional water duck-catching activity, folk parades, an open-air concert in the ancient city, and immersive intangible cultural heritage performances. Consequently, the nationally recognized intangible cultural heritage—the Zhenyuan Dragon Boat Race—went viral and gained widespread attention across multiple platforms.

Zhenyuan has deeply tapped into its cultural tourism resources by rolling out regular "ticket stub economy" initiatives that benefit both residents and visitors. By breaking down the barriers between scenic spots, local merchants, and various business sectors, the county established a new consumption model centered on "one ticket for all, with discounts across the entire county."

Tourists holding ticket stubs from ancient city tours, river cruises, or boat rides can enjoy exclusive discounts at a wide range of local establishments. These include boutique homestays, specialty restaurants, cultural and creative shops, supermarkets, gas stations, home appliance stores, and local specialty outlets. This approach effectively extends visitors' lengths of stay and encourages repeat spending, successfully shifting the local revenue model from single-ticket sales to a comprehensive, county-wide value chain.
