Luoning Cherry Carnival Kicked off in Luoyang

The Luoning Cherry Carnival kicked off in Luoyang in central China's Henan province on May 19.

The carnival features cherry picking, local delicious food and beautiful scenery. It will continue until June 10.

Industrious locals engaged in the development of local tourism and cultivating cherries in the hopes of lifting themselves out of poverty. So far, they have planted several species of cherry including Hongdeng, Meizao and Lapins.

Luoning is famous for its cherries and watermelons. Historically the area is perfect for cultivating fruit: the land is located at a high altitude, it sees a lot of sunlight and there is large difference in temperature between day and night.

This region was designated as production base for planting fruit as a tribute to an emperor in the Han dynasty (202 BC -220 AD), and it has a history of more than 1700 years for fruit growing.
